Attorney Andrea Roche and her husband were recently named Adoptive Parents of the Year for Region 2 by the South Carolina Department of Social Services. While we at Mickle & Bass are very proud of Andrea’s achievements on behalf of her clients and the firm, we are most inspired by Andrea’s big heart, commitment, and trustworthiness – all of which led directly to this deserving recognition.
When Andrea and her husband realized that they couldn’t have children, they decided they wanted to adopt. Although there are many places to turn for adoption, Andrea decided that the best place was right here at home in South Carolina.
“Obviously there are a lot of different ways you can do it. You can go overseas, or you can do private adoptions, but we knew that there are a lot of children here in social services that need homes and need to be adopted,” Andrea says.
Andrea and her husband chose to go through the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) for their adoption process, and they couldn’t have been happier. Andrea describes the overall adoption process as easy and smooth. They worked closely together until they found the perfect match for Andrea and her husband.
Families must go through foster parent training and then wait until a match is found for them. Ultimately, Andrea and her husband attended an event for families looking to adopt with the Department of Social Services. DSS brought photos of children who need to be adopted or fostered, and that is where she first saw the boys she would eventually adopt. Andrea and her husband saw a photo of a group of nine boys, and they became very involved with this family and ended up taking in three children.
Andrea and her husband adopted two boys who were 9 and 13 at the time and are now 13 and 16 years old. She fostered another child for two years who is currently in college.
“It has been a long process with some ups and downs along the way but it has been a remarkable process, and it’s been very fulfilling for both my husband and me,” Andrea says. She describes how proud of her boys she is and how far they’ve come since the initial adoption.

Andrea also emphasizes that South Carolina is in desperate need of good foster parents. If you or someone in your family is interested in learning more about adoption, please visit South Carolina Department of Social Services for more information.
